On November 5 and 6, 2025, BDO Cyber Security GmbH was represented at the “5G Hackathon” organized by the German Federal Office for Information Security (BSI) in Freital by an expert team consisting of Manfred Heinz, Clemens Keil, and Patrick Walker.
As part of the event, our specialists were granted exclusive access to two carrier-grade 5G standalone mobile network systems within the BSI’s state-of-the-art laboratory facilities (TEMIS). The goal of the event was to assess mobile network infrastructures for security vulnerabilities in realistic scenarios and thereby enhance the resilience of actual networks.
Our team’s task was the targeted fuzzing of the PFCP (Packet Forwarding Control Protocol), which is responsible for routing and controlling connection relationships between user equipment within 5G networks. Through their protocol fuzzing activities, the team was able to identify vulnerabilities that can serve as a basis for vendors to implement targeted security improvements and hardening measures.
Participation in the hackathon, following a successful application process, highlights BDO Cyber Security GmbH’s technical expertise in the field of offensive security, particularly in hardware-focused penetration testing and protocol analysis. We leverage this expertise to provide our clients with a comprehensive portfolio of services, including in-depth security assessments and practical, actionable recommendations. We help organizations strengthen the cyber resilience of their systems.
